Did I Really Just Get Charged for Obstruction a Thoroughfare?

What on Earth is Obstruction of a Thoroughfare????

Is the first time you ever heard the word “thoroughfare” when a Tempe Police officer wrote you a ticket for it on Mill Ave? If you are nodding your head, you aren’t alone. I didn’t even know this was a charge until I started practicing in Tempe. I knew jaywalking was illegal, but had no clue that people actually got cited for it. As a criminal defense lawyer, I have represented people for all types of charges, including dui, drug offenses, sex offenses, theft, etc. Only in Arizona would someone really receive a criminal charge for jaywalking.

Sometimes I ask myself what king of planet Arizona lawmakers live on. Is it really necessary to have someone who simply crosses the street outside of a crosswalk to have a criminal record? On a job application, now they must tell their potential employer that they have been convicted of a crime, really?

While running the risk of not sounding like a person who spent three years of law school combing through books, reading thousands of pages written by supreme court justices over the past three decades, I can only use one word to describe obstruction of a thoroughfare, “STUPID.” I’m sorry if this offends you, but this is the only word that can adequately describe this “crime.”
