What are anabolic steroids?

As a result, the US Congress passed the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990, which classified anabolic steroids as Schedule III drugs.
Legal penalties
Arizona considers anabolic steroids a “dangerous drug,” and illegal possession carries potential criminal charges. The severity depends on the circumstances. Here are some examples:
- Class 1 Misdemeanor: This is the likely outcome for a first offense, especially if it’s a small amount for personal use. Penalties can include up to 6 months in jail, a fine of up to $2,500 and probation.
- Class 4 Felony: This is a more serious charge that could result in up to 2.5 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000 and a permanent criminal record. It will apply if you have a prior felony conviction or caught with a larger quantity of steroids.
It is also unlawful for any person to knowingly dispense, sell, or deliver anabolic steroids without a written prescription. An unauthorized sale of Schedule III drugs can lead to five to ten years in prison with a minimum fine of $5,000.
Beyond the law
Athletes who are caught using steroids face more than legal repercussions. Most sports organizations, including professional leagues, high school athletics and the NCAA, have strict anti-doping policies. A positive steroid test can lead to disqualification, suspension or even the stripping of existing sports titles.
