ToggleTempe Police have decided to take their Safe and Sober campaign in a different direction. The focus on reducing alcohol related injuries and crime on and around the ASU campus was put in place in 2013 when the city saw an influx of these problems. There were incidents of binge drinking, alcohol related deaths, and sexual assaults. Tempe Police and ASU Police began the Safe and Sober campaign mainly to enforce underage drinking laws by performing heavy task forces on busy party nights. After complaints came in from the community about a “police state” atmosphere, the agencies have decided to create a more humanized, consistent educational and positive image.
New Direction Does Not Mean Taking it Easy
Students attending Arizona State University and living in Tempe should expect no extra leniencies in underage drinking charges because of this shift in approach. Law enforcement will still be vigilant when it comes to students and drinking. Alcohol related crimes such as minor in consumption of alcohol, minor in possession, assault and disorderly conduct are still common occurrences around ASU, especially on Mill Avenue on Friday and Saturday nights. Police will still be present around Tempe, watching for signs of minors drinking.
