What happens after a DUI charge?

What happens after a DUI charge?

When you’re arrested for driving under the influence, it’s important that you understand what to expect. The effects of a DUI not only reach within the court processes and penalties but to many other aspects of your life.

The process of a DUI charge consists of arrest, booking, bail, arraignment, preliminary hearing, trial and appeals. Penalties of a successful charge rely on the severity of the offense and the number of past offenses. Here are the potential consequences that you will be facing when charged with a standard DUI, meaning that you had a BAC of .08% or more:

  • First offense: at least 10 days in jail, $1,250 in fines, alcohol screening, ignition interlock device and community service
  • Second and following offenses: at least 90 days in jail, $3,000 in fines, 12-month license revocation, alcohol screening, ignition interlock device and community service

Consequences will be more severe if you are found guilty of more serious charges, including Extreme DUI or Aggravated DUI.

Not only will a DUI charge cost you time and money, but it can also affect other parts of your life like your job and your relationships. Some employers have conduct standards that allow them to fire anyone who commits a crime. This means that you may lose your job over a DUI, especially if your position involves driving.

A DUI can strip you of your ability to drive and consequentially your freedom. It can be difficult for many adults to deal with the transition of losing the right to transport themselves. Any crime brings relationship strain, but especially so one that involves dangerous choices, like driving while intoxicated. It can be a hindrance to both your family relationships and social groups.

It’s important to work with a lawyer as soon as you are facing charges for driving under the influence so that you can begin to combat some of the consequences right away.
